A few days ago, I lost my mother to breast cancer. It’s been an incredibly difficult time for me, and I’ve been deeply depressed. My mom passed away in Venezuela, and I couldn’t attend her funeral due to travel restrictions, as my country is communist.

The day I found the Quilted heart, we were on our way to the hospital to visit my niece, who was giving birth to her baby. Along the way, my husband was telling me that I needed to overcome the pain and move forward, that life goes on, and that my mom wouldn’t want to see me like this.

When we arrived at the hospital in Sandy City, Utah we took the elevator and spent more than an hour visiting my niece. As we left, while descending in the elevator, I saw a small cushioned heart on the handrail. Without thinking, I picked it up and held it in my hands.

I felt that this discovery carried a special message for me. Everything in life has its reason, and this little cushioned heart seems to remind me that, although the pain is great, there is always room for love and hope.
