Friday Harbor, WA USA

Peace instead of war: In Washington State the United States and Great Britain *nearly* went to war due to the killing of one pig in 1859. San Juan Island was under joint military occupation for the next 12 years, a huge response with two encampments full of soldiers and weapons. They settled the conflict through peaceful arbitration. This history is celebrated at San Juan Island National Historical Park, and all over the rest of San Juan Island. This particular pig is located at Friday Harbor and was decorated with both a quilted heart and extra red, white, and blue paraphernalia for the upcoming Independence Day holiday.
